The gods We Trust

Many assume the Bay Area is becoming less religious, but the truth is we have not stopped worshipping; we have simply changed what we worship. In a culture shaped by innovation, prosperity, comfort, and the pursuit of happiness, we often look to technology, success, and self-determination to give us meaning, identity, and security. These things promise freedom and fulfillment, but when they take God’s place in our hearts, they become counterfeit gods that cannot ultimately satisfy us. The Bible teaches that every human heart is wired for worship, and whatever we trust most will shape the way we live. In this series, we will expose the idols of our culture and see how the living God confronts them through Jesus Christ, offering a deeper freedom, a truer identity, and a hope that no achievement or prosperity could ever provide.

Modern culture urges us to make ourselves the main character, but swapping God's ultimate authority for self-worship only leads to the exhausting treadmill of self-reliance and performance. Real freedom comes from moving Christ back to the center of our lives, trusting His exchange on the cross to replace our self-centered striving with true identity and rest.

Just as ancient Athenians filled their city with idols, we often replace God with good things like success, comfort, and approval, which ultimately shape us into their anxious, enslaved image. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus rescues us from these empty substitutes, restoring our hearts to true worship and freeing us to enjoy God's gifts without making them gods.
